UK Small
Business Ideas
When
starting up a small business your "business idea"
must be a good one. Ideally you want to offer a product
or service that can be marketed to alot of people (i.e.
nationwide rather than just locally) and it can make you
a profit once you take into account advertising costs
and the costs of materials.
Local
businesses like plumbers, electricians are great as well,
and have been proven time and time again to be profitable.
But it will save you alot of hassel if your small business
can be promoted to alot more people and businesses than
the ones that live reasonably close to you. Here are some
small business ideas:-
A
newsletter or "ezine"
These
are basically emails sent to a number of people who said
they'd like to subscribe to your newsletter. As it's email
the newsletter costs almost nothing to be sent to its
subscribers. You just promote the newsletter online by
building a website and advertising it on toher websites.
You then make money by selling advertising in your newsletter.
Average rates are $10 an add for newsletter with 500+
subscribers. You can visit this free newsletter mailing
list provider for more info ( I use them for my newsletter)
. You can promote your newsletter to people in the
UK or worldwide!
Freelance
Journalist
This
is actually quite an easy job - get paid for writing articles
of around 200-1000 words and selling them to magazines
and newspapers. You'll only need to take a short course
in journalism (many available online) to know how to set
out your articles and what styles to use. Youc an write
how-to articles or report news within your hobbies or
industry. Magasine, in-house publications and newspaper
editors are always wanting more stories and "filler"
for their next edition. You can sell your articles to
any related topic's publication in any country where they
speak the language you've written it in (unless its a
UK specific story).
Avoid:-
Internet
"home-based" affiliate programs.
Affiliate
programs are great if you already own a website, by placing
a short review of a product and a link to its supplier
you can get 10%-50% of the sale. Watch out for "home-based"
affiliate progarms that ask for a fee or expect you to
put £££££ into promotion
of one product - usually these are pyramid schemes, or
selling one product like insurance that doesn't really
have enough staing power to support your sall business
in the long run.
